ABMPRIME: Insights on the Immune Supporting Mushroom, Agaricus Blazei Murill

Functional mushrooms are becoming more and more popular and we’re now seeing the rise of previously unheard of, exotically named mushrooms. Agaricus blazei murill originally from the rainforests of Brazil is one such mushroom. It’s been studied for its medicinal functions for a number of years now and has become so popular in Japan and China that it’s now cultivated across the Far East and made into a popular tea and used in a growing number of nutraceutical formula for immune health.

Agaricus blazei murill is now considered one of the most important medicinal mushrooms in Japan and China. But why so popular? And important?

Functional Uses of Agaricus blazei murill

Agaricus blazei murill was traditionally used in Brazil to help cure all manner of health complaints and diseases. From heart problems to liver disease, diabetes, and even cancer, traditional practitioners would use this mysterious mushroom.*

Since the popularity boom outside of Brazil, many researchers have looked to this fungus as a serious contender as a therapeutic supplement. The mushroom also grows in Easter nations like China and Japan. Scientists have made exciting discoveries in many fields of medicine.

Agaricus blazei murill, like many mushrooms, is a low-calorie food, high in vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. It’s also unusually high in protein and carbohydrate and has high levels of a compound called beta-glucans. Beta-glucans are known for their positive effects on the cells of the immune system called natural killer cells. These cells form part of our defense against invading bacteria and viruses that can make us ill. Stimulating the immune system helps it work even harder to protect us against disease.

Agaricus blazei murill has been found to have powerful anti-inflammatory prowess, too. Studies have shown a reduction in ‘cytokines’ in the blood of subjects with inflammatory bowel diseases ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease after taking an extract of Agaricus blazei murill for 12 days. Cytokines are chemicals that are linked to the development of chronic inflammation and disease. It’s also thought that the beta-glucans within the mushroom have a positive effect on the good bacteria in our gut, helping to keep it functioning healthily.

Agaricus blazei murill has also shown promising effects in the battle against type 2 diabetes. It has shown the ability to decrease insulin resistance in those with the disease, therefore improving the ability of the body to use insulin.*

Although all of this research is in its infancy, it’s exciting nonetheless and shows that the traditional practitioners who have been using it to treat conditions for years were certainly on to something!  It’s approved as a food additive in Japan and is also available as an edible, functional mushroom, as a tea or a tincture and in capsule form everywhere.
