Maitake mushroom is a fungi from the Grifolafrondosa species. They are also known as Sheep’s Head, Hen-of-the-Woods, Ram’s Head, and other names. Maitake is the mushroom’s Japanese name. It means “dancing mushroom.” This mushroom grows in clusters at the base of trees, especially oak trees. Grifolafrondosa is used in both Japanese and traditional Chinese medicine as a powerful medicine that can balance body systems and boost the immune system. This mushroom is also frequently eaten because of its pleasing flavor and texture, especially in Japan.
Maitake mushrooms are sold in health food stores around the world and online at websites that sell herbs, especially Chinese or Asian herbs. They typically grow at the base of the same trees for years, and they can be very large when they are full grown. Maitake can grow to 50 pounds in Japan. Maitake mushrooms have many minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and calcium. They are also full of fibers and amino acids and various vitamins such as D1, B2, and niacin. Maitake mushrooms have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries to boost the immune system. Maitake mushrooms help regulate blood pressure, insulin, glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, and phospholipids. It is also thought that they can aid in helping obesity.
Research in Chinese and U.S. labs have shown that this mushroom is capable of stimulating the immune system. When breast cancer patients took Maitake mushroom supplements, their immune systems were stimulated to produce additional Natural Killer cells. There have been many in vitro experiments that have shown that Maitake mushrooms stimulate both kinds of immune cells, including innate immune system and adaptive immune system. Other research has shown that the Maitake mushroom stopped some types of cancer from reproducing in vitro. It stopped human prostatic cancer cells, skin cancer cells, and stopped cancer cells in dogs as well.
The results in the test with canine cancer cells were with bladder cancer cells. Part of the Maitake mushroom has an anti-cancer capability. Other studies showed that it also has anti-metastatic properties to keep cancer cells from growing and spreading. It is also believed that it may be effective in managing diabetes since it showed a hypoglycemic effect in research tests. Maitake has a natural compound called alpha glucosidase inhibitor that lowers blood sugar. It also contains antioxidants that are helpful to the body. An extract from the Maitake mushroom called D-fraction is sold online at websites that sell traditional Chinese medicines or Asian medicinal herbs such as Maitake. Supplements can be found in capsule form or dried pieces of mushroom that can be boiled in water to make tea or soup. Maitake mushroom is used in traditional Chinese medicine for breast cancer along with chemotherapy. It is also used to prevent colds and the flu.
Reishi mushroom is also called Ling Zhi in Chinese. They are from the Ganoderma lucidum family. Reishi is regarded as one of the most important herbal medicines in China. It is used for many purposes such as to treat allergies, diabetes, liver disease, immune-related diseases, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It is also used as a sports enhancer in parts of China. The active ingredient in the fungus is triterpenoids. Reishi is generally not eaten whole or raw. It is usually made into tea or taken as a powder mixed into another drink.
Reishi spores have a positive benefit on the Qi or chest area and the heart. In traditional Chinese medicine it is also used for treating insomnia, hypertension, poisoning, and gastric ulcers and other diseases. Women in China use Reishi to keep their skin clear and beautiful. They also use it for fighting viral infections because it contains polysaccharides which induce the production of interferon in the body. This protein fights viral infections and is also able to fight tumors in cancer patients and to help their immune systems rid the body of cancer. There are no known toxic effects to this herb, even when consumed in larger than average amounts.
Coriolus Mushroom (Coriolus versicolor) 30% is a fungus that has been used for many centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Coriolus is actually a prescription medicine in Japan and is often prescribe as an anti-cancer drug. Generally, the coriolus mushroom extract works as an immune system strengthener, which helps the body to fight many diseases with which it comes in contact. Its naturally occurring polysaccharides have been proven effective in fighting cancer and supporting a weakened immune system. Other studies have suggested that the mushroom can be useful as a dietary supplement to help individuals maintain a healthy body.
The fungus contains several strong anti-oxidants, which help the body to fight free radicals, which are the most common cause of cancers. There is some research that suggests that the fungus could also be useful in fighting some infections. Most commonly, users prepare Coriolus mushroom as strong tea, or they take it in capsule form or as an extract, in dosages ranging from 1-9 grams per day.
Wulinshen, or Xylaria Nigripes, is a fungus found in some of most inhospitable places on earth. Located about a yard underground in the Odontotermes formosanus termite nest, wulinshen is medium brown in color. Wulinshen serves as a primary source of food for these termites, and as a nutritional storehouse it is well suited to this purpose. In addition to being rich in carbohydrates and protein, Wulinshen boasts an impressive slate of essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals, trace elements, and glycoproteins. But Wulinshen is far more than a food source for these termites.

Wulinshen contains a unique combination of ‘deep-sleep’ nutrients that research has shown of promoting deeper sleep and calmness in the mind. Wulinshen contains glutamic acid, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate decarboxylase, all of which are known to assist in the uptake of GABA by specific brain cell receptors that exert a mild tranquilizing effect on the central nervous system.
In pharmacological studies, elevated levels of glutamic acid and GABA have demonstrated to upregulate the binding affinity of GABA receptors in the brain in subjects in treatment groups. Furthermore, the activity of glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) was also increased in these subjects, indicating that Wulinshen possesses the ability to enhance the uptake of glutamic acid and GABA into the brain to activate GABA receptors, resulting in significant deep sleep and mood-uplifting effects.
A member of the gourd family that grows in southern China, 16 species and 3 variations of Jiaogulan have been discovered and documented so far. It is relatively new to the list of adaptogens. According to recent studies, Jiaogulan contains nearly four times as many saponins as Panax ginseng. These saponins, known as gypenosides, are similar to the ginsenosides and panaxosides found in Asian ginseng. Preliminary studies also suggest Jiaogulan may have even more powerful regulatory effects on a number of body systems than does Asian ginseng.
Jiaogulan has traditionally been grown in the remote mountainous regions in South Central China, where the inhabitants enjoy longevity and good health. In ancient times, Jiaogulan was consumed as the sole source of nutrient during famine. Later, this herb became a popular dietary botanical and tea known for its refreshing taste and its health giving benefits. Jiaogulan has often being referred to as the most powerful adaptogenic Chinese herb and the “Miracle Grass”.
Like all herbal products, the growing environment plays a very important role in the quality of the herb. NuLiv analyzed the gypenosides content of Jiaogulan grown in seven major production regions in China and found that Jiaogulan grown in one region contains the highest gypenosides. NuLiv also analyzed the content of trace elements in Jiaogulan from various regions, the results showed that Jiaogulan from this same region contains more than twenty three trace elements, thirteen of them are essential to human health (Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Co, Cr, Mo, Se, Ni, V, Sr, Si, B). NuLiv choose to work only with Jiaogulan grown in this region.
PROPRIETARY EXTRACTION PROCESS
NuLiv uses a proprietary “Resin Adsorption” technique to extract the beneficial gypenosides in Jiaogulan from the freshest and premium crop from this particular region to produce a product of high purity and yield. During the extraction process, the Rb1 gypenoside is monitored at each steps of the process to assure the quality of the finished product meets ours and customer’s specifications. A NuLiv Science Proprietary Rosa Roxburghii Fruit Extract
Rosa roxburghii, also known as ‘Chestnut Rose’, ‘Burr Rose’, and ‘Chinquapin Rose’ is a low growing fruit tree native to some small remote regions in Southern China. It was named after William Roxburgh who was an assistant surgeon with the East India Company and the first westerner to introduce this tree to the western world.
R. Roxburghii fruit is oval or spindle-shaped, orange colored, heavily covered with soft or hard prickles. It is rich in Vitamin C, phenols and abundance of other Vitamins and Flavonoids, trace elements as well as amino acids. The natural fruit contains 46 times more Vitamin C than oranges and 120 times more Flavonoids than many vegetables and 10-60 times more than that of other fruits.
NuLiv’s lab assays and in vitro studies have demonstrated that R. Roxburghii fruit extract produces potent SOD-Like activity in human cells that is capable of quenching superoxide free radicals. This unique property distinguishes R. Roxburghii from the S.O.D found in other plants which is mostly destroyed by stomach acids.
RosaEx™ contains extremely high content of Vitamin C (3% or greater), Phenols (10% or greater) and Flavonoids derived naturally from the fruit itself as well as Vitamins A, B1, B2, D, E and trace elements.
RosaEx™ also contains compound(s) that produces potent SOD-like activity in the human body (see section 5) that can neutralize one of the most destructive free radical, Superoxide. Osteosine™ is a proprietary all natural plant derived bone health nutraceutical complex developed by NuLiv Science. Osteosine™ has shown in NuLiv’s one in-vitro and two in-vivo studies to:
Osteoblasts builds new bone tissue and osteoclasts remove old bone tissue by removing its mineralized matrix and breaking up the organic bone (organic dry weight is 90% collagen). In NuLiv’s in-vitro study, Osteosine™ has shown to increase the osteoblasts, a mononucleate cell, by 20%. More osteoblasts build more new bone tissue to replace lost old bone tissue. These observations were validated through biomarkers such as ALP, IL-1, IL-6, OPG, RANK, that have been associated with their presence and activities (5).
In NuLiv’s two in-vivo studies, the PO (post-ovariectomized) and the RA models (Retinoic Acid Induced), Osteosine™ has shown to increase serum calcium, serum tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase, serum osteocalcin, bone alkaline phosphatase, bone ash, bone calcium, bone phosphorus contents in the treatment versus the control groups. More importantly, the structural strength of bone that is critical for bone’s ability to withstand fracture, the trabecula surface, average surface percent and weight of trabecula, were also improved (6).
NuLiv has received over a dozen DEXA lab reports in the past years from customers who have purchased and taken Osteosine™ and sent in these reports as a requirement to receive free Osteosine™ product described in NuLiv’s incentive program. This Osteosine™ contains the Osteosine™ with small amounts of minerals and vitamin D3 and K2 added. Table 1 below summarizes the information given in table 2 that contains tabulated original data in these reports.

The human laboratory data presented in table 1 correspond to NuLiv’s in-vitro and two in-vivo studies. Even though the results are not from a controlled human clinical trial, it is reasonably to suggest that the lifestyle, diet, supplement, and physical activities are about or approximately the same before, during, and after the Osteosine™ supplementation periods. That is to say, the subjects who voluntarily offered these lab reports stayed with the same diet, taken about the same amount of calcium and vitamin D3, and engaged in the same level of physical activities, that included walking and weight bearing exercises.
Osteosine™ has been sold through Internet, health stores and mail catalogs worldwide since 2004.
NuLiv Science in-vitro study suggested that Osteosine™ may alter the bone “remodeling” process by enhancing the activity of osteoblasts and decreasing the activity of osteoclasts so more new bone tissues are built to outpace the amount of old bone tissues that are removed.
NuLiv Science two in-vivo studies further demonstrated that Osteosine™ increased the BMD and trabecula surface area and width in both the menopause/post-menopause and externally induced acute osteoporosis models.
The human laboratory data, although collected from customers that are not part of a controlled human study, but nevertheless represents a set of true factual data that approximate what a controlled and well design human experimental design will possibly yield.
One interesting note from these lab reports indicated some of these customers were formerly on osteoporosis drugs and discontinued taking these drugs either because of side effects or none effectiveness of these drugs.
