Beverage-Grade Cordyceps: Why Particle Size Is the Secret to Smoother Mushroom Drinks

Beverage-grade cordyceps is cordyceps mushroom powder that has been ground much finer than normal, so it spreads evenly through a drink instead of sinking to the bottom. NuLiv Science's new CordycepsPrime™ Beverage Grade is milled to 25 to 30 microns. That is about a third of the width of a human hair and invisible to the human eye. The result is a drink with no gritty texture, made with the same fermented cordyceps NuLiv has produced since 1997.

Mushroom drinks are having a big moment. There are now around 400 brands of mushroom drinks and drink mixes, and that number keeps climbing, according to Beverage Industry. Analysts at Persistence Market Research expect the functional mushroom drinks market to grow from about US$1.6 billion in 2026 to US$3.5 billion by 2033.

But there is a problem most people never think about. Mushrooms do not dissolve in water. If the powder is too coarse, it sinks, feels sandy and puts people off the drink. Beverage-grade cordyceps was made to fix exactly that.

What is cordyceps?

Cordyceps is a type of fungus. The best-known kind, Cordyceps sinensis, grows wild high up on the Tibetan Plateau, at around 10,000 feet. It has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries to help people feel more energetic and less tired.

Wild cordyceps is very rare and very expensive. So today, most quality cordyceps is grown through fermentation. This is a bit like brewing: the mushroom grows in big tanks of liquid under carefully controlled conditions. In 1997, NuLiv Science became one of the first companies to bring fermented Cordyceps sinensis to the United States. That ingredient became CordycepsPrime™, and it is where the company began.

Today, cordyceps is often called "the performance mushroom." Scientists have studied it for energy, endurance and how well the body uses oxygen during exercise. In one small 12-week trial of healthy adults aged 50 to 75, a fermented Cordyceps sinensis extract improved some measures of exercise performance (PubMed). Other studies in trained cyclists did not find the same effect (PubMed), so research is still growing. You can explore more of the science in NuLiv's Research Library.

Why don't mushroom powders mix well in drinks?

Think about stirring sugar into water. The sugar dissolves and disappears. Now think about stirring sand into water. The sand swirls around for a second, then sinks to the bottom.

Mushroom powder behaves more like the sand. It does not dissolve, it only spreads out (scientists call this "dispersing"). Standard mushroom powders are made of fairly big particles, so they:

  • Sink quickly to the bottom of the bottle or can
  • Sink again soon after you shake them
  • Leave a gritty, sandy feeling in your mouth

For a brand making a drink, that is a real headache. People decide whether they like a drink in the first few sips. If it feels grainy, many will not buy it again, however good the ingredients are.

What makes CordycepsPrime™ Beverage Grade different?

The answer is size. It's invisible to the human eye! CordycepsPrime™ Beverage Grade is milled to 25 to 30 microns. A micron is one thousandth of a millimeter. To picture it, each particle is about a quarter of the width of a grain of sand and about a third of the width of a human hair.

You may also see it described as 500 mesh. Mesh is a way of measuring powder by the sieve it can pass through. The number tells you how many tiny holes there are in one inch of the sieve. The higher the number, the smaller the holes, and the finer the powder. 500 mesh is very fine.

Because the particles are so small, the powder:

  • Spreads smoothly through liquid
  • Sinks slowly instead of dropping straight to the bottom
  • Mixes back in with a gentle swirl, a bit like miso soup
  • Leaves no texture you can feel in the finished drink

The important part is that NuLiv did not change the mushroom. It is the same fermented Cordyceps sinensis, made with the same liquid fermentation process the company has used since 1997. It is simply ground much finer."Standardized to 8% cordycepic acid" means every batch is tested to contain the same amount of this natural compound, so brands get a consistent ingredient every time. "DNA fingerprint verified" means the mushroom's DNA is checked to prove it really is Cordyceps sinensis and not a cheaper look-alike.

Why does this matter right now?

Three big trends are shaping mushroom drinks in 2026, and beverage-grade cordyceps fits all of them.

1. People want energy without the jitters. More shoppers are moving away from very high-caffeine drinks and looking for gentler, plant-based options (Persistence Market Research). Cordyceps brings a non-stimulant energy story, which is why it is turning up in energy drinks, pre-workouts and mushroom coffees.

2. Drinks are built around moments in the day. Beverage developers are creating drinks for specific occasions, such as morning focus, clean energy, workout recovery and alcohol-free "functional mocktails" (Beverage Industry). Ready-to-drink cans and small shots are perfect for these moments, but they are also the formats where grit is most obvious.

3. Quality and honesty are under the spotlight. As the market has grown fast, concerns about ingredient quality and accurate labels have grown too. In 2026, a new industry group called the Functional Mushroom Council launched to push for shared quality standards and better testing (NutraIngredients). Ingredients with clear specs, standardized compounds and DNA verification are easier for brands to trust and easier to explain to customers.

What NuLiv Science says

“We're really stoked about this one. CordycepsPrime launched our company back in 1997, so it's a little personal for us. Cordyceps has always been tough to get into a drink without too much settling, and cracking the beverage grade opens up a whole new market. Same high quality we've had for nearly thirty years, now in a format beverage brands can actually use”.

Richard Wang, CEO, NuLiv Science

What kinds of products is it made for?

CordycepsPrime™ Beverage Grade is built for liquid and semi-liquid products, where texture matters most:

  • Ready-to-drink (RTD) beverages: canned and bottled energy drinks, functional sodas, iced teas and mushroom coffees
  • Energy shots: small, concentrated drinks where every sip counts
  • Gels and gummies: sachets, pouches and gummy supplements, popular with athletes and busy people on the go

It also works well alongside other mushrooms. Cordyceps pairs naturally with LionsManePrime™ for drinks that promise energy plus focus. You can see the full range of Prime Series functional mushrooms or read how NuLiv supports sports and performance brands.

Common questions about beverage-grade cordyceps

Does cordyceps powder dissolve in water? No. Mushroom powders never fully dissolve. They spread through the liquid instead. The finer the powder, the more evenly it spreads and the slower it sinks. At 25 to 30 microns, CordycepsPrime™ Beverage Grade is fine enough that you cannot feel it in the drink.

What does 500 mesh mean in a drink? It means the powder can pass through a sieve with 500 tiny holes per inch. In practice, it gives a smooth drink with no sandy feel. If some powder settles over time, a light swirl mixes it back in.

Is beverage-grade cordyceps the same as regular CordycepsPrime™? Yes, it is the same fermented Cordyceps sinensis, standardized to 8% cordycepic acid and made with the same process NuLiv has used since 1997. The only difference is that it is milled much finer for drinks.

Does cordyceps work like caffeine? No. Cordyceps is not a stimulant. It has been studied for energy, endurance and how the body uses oxygen. That is why many brands pair it with, or use it instead of, caffeine to build a calmer energy drink.

Which drinks is beverage-grade cordyceps best for? Ready-to-drink beverages, energy shots, mushroom coffees, gels and gummies. These are the products where texture is most noticeable, so a finer powder makes the biggest difference.
