How to Tell If a Supplement Ingredient Is Clean

Anyone can claim quality. The real question is whether they can prove it.

If you’re a brand sourcing ingredients, or a consumer trying to make sense of a label, here’s what actually separates a genuinely clean ingredient from one that just says it is.

“Don’t just ask for a specification sheet. Ask for an independent third-party testing.” - Ken, NuLiv Science

Don’t stop at a specification sheet

A specification sheet tells you what an ingredient is supposed to be. It doesn’t verify what it actually is. If you want proof, ask for independent third-party testing instead.

Know who you’re buying from

If you’re buying an ingredient through a trader rather than directly from the manufacturer, don’t take their word for it on quality. Ask for the actual reports.

What to request

Look for testing from recognized independent labs, such as Eurofins or Alkemist Labs. A proper report will verify:

  • Identity, confirming the ingredient is what it claims to be
  • Potency, confirming it contains what the label says at the level it says
  • Heavy metals
  • Pesticides
  • Any other contaminants

Why this matters

Claims are easy. Documentation isn’t. A brand or supplier that can hand over real third-party testing is showing you something a marketing claim never can: independent proof. If a supplier can’t produce that testing when asked, that’s worth paying attention to.

Before you commit to an ingredient or a finished product, ask the question: can you show me the report?
